Dorset Farm House
Project Details: Dorset Farm House, Corscombe.
The owners of Dorset Farm House were looking to make better use of available resources when undertaking an extensive refurbishment and extension of their home. The house consists of three floors totalling around 320m2.
The owners approached ISO Energy to design a renewable heating solution that would both heat their home and provide enough hot water for the family all year round. Previously, the owners of the house used an oil fired boiler to heat the house at a cost of approximately £4,500 a year. They were keen to move away from burning fossil fuels and wanted to reduce household costs, they were also keen to help the environment.
ISO Energy used the CTC size it selection software and chose the CTC Ecopart 424 XL twin compressor heat pump for a variety of reasons including reliability, small footprint and its ability to direct different levels of heat to various zones, depending on the current heat demand. This reduces heat pump cycling, prolonging the life of the installation and increases overall efficiency.
The presence of a natural stream on the land offered the perfect opportunity to use the CTC EcoPart 424 XL as a water source heat pump to extract energy from running stream. ISO Energy specified the use of the new Energy Blade 3k4 heat exchanger collector array. This innovative approach in compact energy collection was perfect for use in the stream, and would collect the required 20kW of natural energy for the heat pump from a really small footprint of collector (around 3m3 volume of fast flowing water).
The CTC Ecologic Pro controller gave ISO Energy the additional solution of providing Solar Thermal heat energy from solar thermal collectors to supply further free energy to the 500 litre hot water load for the property. The EcoLogic has a built in tariff control and will prioritise the solar gains over using the heat pump to heat hot water. This level of control offers a full intelligent solution to the multiple energy sourced heating system.
Saving in money & fuel
Due to the performance of the EnergyBlade 3k4, coupled with the CTC heat pumps, the client has recorded savings over £2500 per annum on their fuel bill compared to burning oil. When the domestic Renewable Heat Incentive is added to the savings the whole project the savings become an income of just under £10,000 each year for the next seven years. The end result is a payback period for the installation of just over five years.
